Muller Martini unveils performance pair for perfect binding

Muller Martini Publica Pro

The Swiss owned manufacturer has launched new perfect binders with increased levels of digital control for speed and to handle shorter runs. The Muller Martini Publica Pro is the new high performance perfect binder running at up to 18,000sph and is a replacement for the Corona model. The top end machine is joined by a new version of the Vareo binder for digital print applications, also with Pro designation.

Muller Martini has introduced two new perfect binders, one a new version of its Vareo digital binder, the other a new high speed, high volume machine that will become the flagship of the portfolio.

This is the Publica Pro, reviving a name that Kolbus has used for its high performance machines. It is based on the KM 412 perfect binder and will be made at the Rahden plant in northern Germany that Muller Martini acquired in 2018. The machine comes in three variants, offering 12,000cph, 15,000cph and 18,000cph, the latter with 40 clamps.

As a result, Muller Martini no longer includes the Corona binder in its product portfolio. The first installation, of the Public Pro at Westermann Druck, has also replaced a Corona which the company had intended to move to new premises to run alongside an existing Muller Martini line. Instead it has become the pilot user for the new model with Publica Pro 15, replacing the two older machines.

The new model incorporates features from the KM610 perfect binder, including angled side gluing disks. Glue film length on the spine is adjusted automatically, the minimum spine length ranging from 105mm on the Pro 12 and Pro 15 and 140mm on the Pro 18 up to maximum lengths of 510mm on the Pro 12, 420mm on the Pro 15 and 360mm on the Pro 18. Book width ranges from 3mm to 100mm.

The biggest change is perhaps a new touch screen controlled CoPilot system, which uses four screens that have similar interactivity to a smartphone screen. Automated set up and connectivity to a production network enables even the larger machine to cope with fast turnaround short runs.

The Pro designation also applies to the digital perfect binder, the Vareo Pro. This introduces a new hotmelt spine gluing system, derived from the Alegro binder, and a PUR nozzle system ensuring a loss free application of the adhesive to the spine.

As with the Publica, the Pro refers to the new touch screen interface and integration with the Infinitrim robotic trimmer. And like the Publica Pro and Alegro Pro, the new Vareo is ready for Industry 4.0 operation. A single Infinitrim can be fed from two of the binders in a production cell. In certain circumstances Muller Martini has connected a single Infinitrim to four Vareo binders in a production cell. Output from the Vareo Pro can equally be directed for hardcover book production. It operates at 1,350cph.

The new machines give Muller Martini a line up of three perfect binding models, the book of one Vareo, the Alegro for up to 7,000 cycles per hour production and the Publica Pro for high speed production. The KM200 remains the machine for higher volume digital book production, with dynamic adjustment to cope with print run of one operation. The KM 610 mid volume 9,000cph and the KM412 18,000cph binders also remain available, though without the digital control systems.
